After 18 months of high-speed underground development, Westfill officially wrapped up its contract at the Darlot Gold Mine on 7 July 2025.
The project began in January 2024, when Westfill mobilised a specialised team of four jumbo operators, four nippers and four fitters, supported by a Sandvik DD421 twin boom jumbo. From the outset, the mission was clear: increase development capacity on site to meet the mine’s demanding schedule and budget targets.
OUTSTANDING RESULTS DELIVERED
The project achieved some remarkable milestones, reflecting both the capability of the Westfill team and the strength of its operational processes:
-
- 0 Lost Time Injuries (LTIs)
- 2,692 shifts completed and 32,304 hours worked
- 467,976 total jumbo drill metres
- 32,967 peak monthly drill metres
- 26,141 average monthly drill metres
- 4.2 km of total advance metres
These results highlight not only the productivity achieved but also the safety and reliability maintained throughout the contract.
A PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON COLLABORATION
Westfill extends its thanks to the team at Vault Minerals for their collaboration and teamwork throughout the project. Close coordination with the client played a vital role in ensuring operational priorities were met and that site standards were upheld without compromise.
Reflecting on the partnership, Kim Gundersen, Former Darlot Mine Manager, shared his experience:
“During my tenure as the Mining Manager at Darlot (formerly Red 5, now Vault Minerals), we engaged Westfill to increase our development capacity on site above what was able to be achieved by our own team and fleet. The site required 400 metres per month to meet schedule and budget targets.
Westfill mobilised a twin boom jumbo plus light vehicles and experienced Jumbo Operators, Nippers, and Fitters. Mobilisation was prompt and well-coordinated. From the outset, Westfill demonstrated a clear understanding of operational priorities, integrating effectively with the owner’s team and maintaining compliance with site standards.
Westfill’s personnel were competent, production-focused, and aligned with site safety and operational expectations. The crew maintained high equipment availability and delivered consistent performance throughout their contract.
Westfill operates with a high level of accountability and flexibility. They have access to a strong labour pool and respond rapidly to operational requirements. I consider them a reliable contractor and would engage them again under similar circumstances.”
DEMONSTRATING WESTFILL’S STRENGTHS
The Darlot Gold Mine contract stands as a strong example of Westfill’s ability to deliver bespoke mining contracts that are tailored to the specific requirements of each site. From rapid mobilisation to consistent production and a safety-first mindset, Westfill continues to prove its reputation as a contractor of choice in the underground mining sector.
